The UN convention for people with disabilities will soon be ratified. This has major implications for accessibility in the broad sense for people with disabilities.
The Convention promotes, protects and guarantees the full enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all people with disabilities. This on an equal basis with others.
Participation for all
Shopping, going to school, going to the theatre, travelling by bus, applying for a passport at the municipal office, going to the pub. Just some of the things people do. There are people who do not just ‘do these things’. Because buildings, leaflets, pavements, buses are not convenient. Because you can’t hear or see as well, for instance. Or can’t read as well. Or your head is full. Or you can’t move as well.
A newspaper
We have recorded what the consequences are at municipal level in an easy-to-read newspaper for you. For municipalities, this newspaper is interesting because it names all the topics on which they should be active. For the citizen with a disability, it is also interesting because the newspaper states what he or she can expect from the municipality in the near future.
The UN Convention and Maastricht
Brigitte van Lierop is active in Maastricht in supporting local advocates and the municipality to actually implement the UN Convention.
To this end, Maastricht has established a Local Coalition for Inclusion, in which advocates work together to increase accessibility in the broad sense in Maastricht.
